Denali Monarch (won First Place High Excellence in juried competition)
There are but few sites in nature that rank with the splendor of Denali in the early morning of a cloudless day, or a regal moose frozen in mid stride as he tests the air for a scent wafted to him on the morning breeze. The artist has endeavored to catch the inspiration of both of these moments in his painting Denali Monarch. Denali, the highest of North American peaks, and the bull moose, the largest of North America's antlered clan are fitting subjects for a beautiful painting.. The moment portrayed is a dramatic one. The air is still...no ripple ruffles the water's surface. Mists still rise slowly as the water temperature is warmer than the morning air. In that setting, the moose has either picked up an errant scent or his sharp ears have detected a sound out of place. Whatever it is, he is at his finest as he prepares to respond accordingly.

No Fair - Limited Edition Print
Sometimes life is simply not fair.
This scene, taken from early childhood memories, depicts a milk maid busy with the evening task. The inequity is that the calf stands by, resentful that his milk is being pilfered by one too big to oppose. To add to the inequity, the cat has already received his portion. Who said life was going to be fair anyway?

Springtime Glory - Limited Edition Print
This picture was painted several years ago as a labor of love for my wife on our 25th anniversary. My wife has always liked pretty things, especially flowers. She is a beautiful person both inwardly and outwardly and the best would never be too good for her. The original painting is displayed in our living room with special lighting. It is appropriately framed in an ornate, antique silver frame.
The picture was intended to depict an overflowing bouquet of colorful flowers that might have been gathered about the turn of the twentieth century. Two chirping sparrows contend for the right to pick up a few fallen seeds.

In Eden's Day
_
In a land where waterfalls appear frequently, Rainbow Falls, in Hilo, Hawaii, is a gem. It occurs on the Wailuku River just off Waianuenue Avenue. Movies have been filmed here, busloads of tourists visit it daily and lovers come here to plight their troth.
The artist has painted the falls at a season when it is running quite full, as it might have looked in Eden's day...before the white man added his movements to technoloty (no observatories appear on the crest of Mauna Kea in the distance.) Its name is derived from the rainbow that always appears in the mists of the falls on sunny days.

When the Boats Go Out
_
Just beyond the harbor of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico occur massive rock structures that mark the terminus of the Baja California peninsula. They are majestic; they are mountainous;
and they are picturesque. Beyond this point lies nothing but water. The blue
waters of the Pacific lie to the right, the warmer waters of the Gulf of California lie to the left. It is the winter birthing grounds of
humpback whales and the playground of myriads of dolphin. Its waters team with
numerous varieties of game fish, including all types of marlin, sailfish, tuna,
dorado, wahoo, rooster fish and rock fish.
One of the striking features of this area is El Arco, an archway chiseled from solid rock by the action of waves from time immemorial. El Arco is such a well known feature that nearly all promotional material from the area displays its image prominently on their advertising. It is indeed impressive. When storms move enough sand into the area, one can walk through the archway during low tide. I have had that experience.

Squabble Over Fishing Rights
_ The American Egret is the largest of the large white birds that are native to this country. Along with other water birds of various kinds, they inhabit coastal areas of the deep south. Here two males, that will soon be entering into their fine plumage phase, contest the right to fish in a particularly desirable location among the coastal mangroves.

Spooked - Studio Edition Print
_The American Pronghorn Antelope is the fastest land animal in North America. They have been clocked at speeds up to 65 miles per hour. Their main line of defense against predators is their speed and sharp eyesight.
Antelope inhabit the short grass lands of the northern mid-American plains. Because they are really a member of the goat family, they stay close to the ground when they run. They run under fences, even at full speed, instead of jumping over them like the deer. They were common on the South Dakota prairies where I was reared as a boy.
Something has just alarmed the above animal and he is preparing to spin and race off in the direction of his two companions.

Anticipation
_ Is there any heart-stopping expectancy as that a fly fisherman knows when he has made the right presentation at the upstream end of the lair of a lunker brook trout. When the shadow rises from the depths of the pool to inspect the offering, the fisherman’s mouth goes dry and a swallow catches in his throat. Such is the moment David Bishop has depicted in this painting entitled, “Anticipation”.

Moment of Truth
_
The walleye pike is a much sought after game fish in the rivers and lakes of the United States and Canada. A member of the perch family, the walleye can attain a size that dwarfs its perch cousins. Two favorite times to target a big walleye is after ice in the spring and before freeze up in the fall. While the walleye is a great fish to pursue for sport, one of their greatest virtues is the delectable table fare they provide.
In the painting, “Moment of Truth,” two fishermen are up before sunrise to try and catch the elusive pike. The man in the bow of the boat has just hung one and the other stands transfixed with his rod out of the water as he watches. The walleye meanwhile, has found a small snag on the bottom and only time will tell the outcome of this dual. It is a moment of truth.

Ice fishing is one of the great sports of winter. All you need is a robust spirit, warm clothes and boots, an old jalopy to get you to the lake, an ice auger and some very simple fishing equipment with bait.
In the painting, “Winter’s Bounty,” two brave souls are out after the common yellow perch…and they’re doing well. The setting for this picture is Sheridan Lake near Rapid City, South Dakota on a brisk, crystal clear day. What a great day to go fishing!

Fish On!
_
One of the sportiest game
fish in the ocean is the Dorado. When you are fortunate enough to hang a big
bull, as in the painting, “Fish On,” the action is heart arresting. The Dorado
fights with a ferocity that belies his size. He is an aerialist and seemingly
never tires of leaping and shaking his head in an effort to dislodge the hook.
The Dorado is known by different names in different climes. In Puerto Rice, for example, he is called a dolphin fish. In Hawaii he is called mahi-mahi. Whatever the name, he is a colorful prize. He has been called by some the most beautiful fish that swims for when he is excited he flashes iridescent hues of green, yellow and gold and all hues in between. When you see such a fish in action, you will be struck with the creature’s luminescence.

Monarch of the Wenas - Limited Edition Print
In a valley called the “Wenas” (pronounced We-nas), about twenty miles in the direction of the mountains from Yakima, Washington, is a place where hundreds of elk winter every year. It is the progeny of a herd of Rocky Mountain Elk that were transplanted to the area many years ago, and they have done well.
Some of the bulls that wander the Wenas are huge. They are enough to make the blood of a hunter pound in his temples as he fixes his cross hairs for a kill. This monarch would be classed as a royal elk by virtue of the number of tines he carries. The first snow is falling and he is bugling his challenge. It is the time of the fall rut and he will take on all comers for the privilege of siring the next generation.

Heaven Came Down - Limited Edition Print
In April, 1906, and continuing around the clock for more than three years, one of the most amazing heavenly visitations occurred in Los Angeles in what has become known as the Azusa Street Revival. Today more than 600 million Pentecostals and Charismatics world-wide either directly or indirectly trace their spiritual lineage to what happened at the Azusa Mission during those days.
In this painting Pastor William J. Seymour stands at the door of the humble Azusa Street Mission as the faithful begin to gather. In the gathering are rich and poor, black and white, spiritually hungry, and just plain curious people. The Upper Room of the Mission was continually occupied by seekers tarrying for the Pentecostal blessing.

Getting Acquainted - Studio Edition Print
The Rocky Mountain horse is a relatively new breed developed in, of all places, Kentucky. They are a smooth riding, gaited horse and very gentle. They are typically chocolate brown in color with blond mane.
My brother James raises Rocky Mountain horses in South Dakota. On one of my visits, one of his mares, “Lady”, had just given birth to a colt the night before. They named him “Legend”. A good subtitle would be “Lady, Legend, and Jim”.
This is an actual scene of what took place. The picture was painted from a photograph and is the type of work I accept on a commission basis.

When the Land Was Theirs - Limited Edition Print
In days gone by, the American Bison, or buffalo as we called it, thundered across the plains in masses almost beyond description. To read some of the early eye-witness accounts of their numbers is to flirt with the unbelievable.
The buffalo is a noble and tenacious beast. It defies both extremes of weather predators and survives. But it was unable to withstand the wasteful onslaughts of hunters, so called, who were little more than “thrill seekers”…and it almost didn’t survive. The slaughter of the herds and the wanton waste that characterized them, paralleled the westward movement of the white man. The buffalo was considered to be a renewable resource that would never wane in significant numbers but they did. So thorough was the decimation that they became endangered and in some areas where they had been plentiful, they became extinct.
In the painting, “When the Land Was Theirs”, the artist has depicted a herd placidly moving across a familiar South Dakota landscape, grazing as they go. Why not? It’s their land. Feeding buffalo usually move together in one direction. In this painting, only four of the many depicted are not moving in the same general direction. The locale depicted is Bear Butte northeast of Sturgis and south of Newell, South Dakota. The time of day is just before sunset. The air is still fresh from a passing summer rain shower. If you were to take the road from Sturgis to Newell today, this is the view you would have of Bear Butte as you approach it from the south.

Too Full to Care - Limited Edition Print
The Alaskan brown bear is an intimidating and imposing creature, no matter the pose he strikes or the demeanor he is projecting. He has more than enough power and explosive speed to back up his whims. For this reason it is always best to give him a very wide berth.
In the painting, “Too Full to Care,” the artist has depicted Mr. Brownie in a most unlikely pose. He is stretched out on a log, dozing of all things. Even during nap time one would instinctively know, this fellow is not to be messed with.
The summer runs of salmon that ascend the rivers of Alaska, are feasting times for bears. The salmon can run in such numbers that it is no problem to catch more than enough to sate a prodigious appetite. This bear has probably been fishing for some time and has had more than enough. The remains of his last chum salmon is still by the stream and two magpies, birds that are indigenous to the west from Mexico to Alaska, are feasting on the remains. And, oh yes…brownie isn’t even giving it a thought, for a change. He’s too full to care!

Abalone On The Rocks - Limited Edition Print
The Alaskan Sea Otter is so ugly he's cute. In addition to being unique in appearance, he is well adapted to his environment. In summer months he lives almost exclusively in the ocean, rarely coming on land. You can see him bobbing about in kelp beds or on the open sea where he often joins with other sea otters in forming small groups. One would wonder how the creature survives living in such frigid waters. An Alaskan park ranger told us the reason for the otter's indifference to cold water is because of their unusual furry insulation. He had a pelt with him and he invited us to feel its softness. It was incredible! Then he told us that the sea otter pelt has about 1,000 hairs to the square inch. This is a very effective barrier against the cold and is precisely the reason they were nearly hunted to extinction in the early days of the Alaskan frontier.
One of the sea otter's favorite foods is the abalone. He dives to the bottom, often at great depth, and brings one to the surface along with a rock. Placing the rock on his chest he proceeds to bang away with the abalone on the rock until he succeeds in chipping it open. Then he feasts on the delicious repast...abalone on the rocks!

A Defining Moment - Limited Edition Print
An apocalyptic vision is captured in the painting, “A Defining Moment”, commissioned by the Church of God for the centennial issue of the Church of God Evangel. An angel hovers between heaven and earth, holding a poised trumpet and looking toward the sky as if expecting a signal. A nearly spent hourglass is held in his hand indicating the time is short.
In the distance, storm clouds gather over the nations of the world symbolized by the city in the distance. To the right, an angel holds back dark clouds of judgment. At the same time, skies remain open over the church which is placed in an imposing setting on a hill above the city. Light from heaven streams down upon the church which is apparently full of people experiencing the glory of the last day outpouring. A second angel reaches down with arms outstretched in blessing. The whole scene reflects the glow of late evening, signaling that night will soon come.

Probably Not - Limited Edition Print
Wolves can be fearless predators, but even wolves can recognize an unlikely scenario. That’s why this particular scripture verse, Luke 14:31, has been affixed to this painting. It reads, “Or what king, going to war against another king, does not sit down first and consult whether he will be able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand.”
Certainly there are no kings or soldiers involved in this confrontation…but it is a studied confrontation between kings, nonetheless. These two wolves have sized up the possibilities and have decided, “probably not.” The other king, the moose, hasn’t so much as given the matter his apparent attention.
Under different circumstances, the confrontation may have been more interesting to the wolves. If it had been winter and the lake had been frozen and topped by relatively deep snow, the wolves would probably have considered it differently…and the moose would have given it his utmost attention. But as it is…it’s an interesting chance meeting between two kings in the wilds of the great land of Alaska.

Rhapsody in Blue and Gold - Limited Edition Print
The title, “Rhapsody in Blue and Gold”, is almost a tongue in cheek expression with apologies to George Gershwin who composed the immortal jazz piece, “Rhapsody in Blue”. To me, however, the title seems appropriate. While the word rhapsody generally refers to a type of musical composition or an epic poem of ancient Greece, one definition is rendered as “extravagant enthusiasm.” Considering the colors and the exciting chattering of Macaws, it seems appropriate.
The picture is set in a tropical rain forest environment of Costa Rica. The rain laden clouds and fleeting rainbows are a common part of the scenery in this beautiful country. They seem to add to the nebulous idea of rhapsody. Four blue and gold Macaws chatter among themselves about the latest avian gossip while a fifth flits by. Prized for their plumage and as house pets, these beautiful birds are sadly becoming rare in much of their former habitat. They are one of God’s masterpieces of beauty in nature.
