About the Artist

David Bishop was born on the Bishop homestead between Lemmon and Thunder Hawk, South Dakota in 1933. The second of four boys born to Joel L. and Grace Bishop, he showed an interest in art from early childhood. During his early grade school years, in a one-room country school, he was fortunate enough to have two teachers with artistic abilities who took an interest in encouraging his artistic side. As a first grader he won his first art contest with a large poster featuring six smaller drawings of dogs.
David received his first oil painting set at fourteen years of age, and his paternal grandmother, who had created some fine oil paintings in her earlier years, became his first art tutor. While in college David took a number of art classes but did not pursue art as a major or minor. As a young man he accepted a call to the Christian ministry and has given his whole life to this pursuit. Painting became a way to fulfill some of his creative needs and at times a way to supplement his income.
In the 1980’s David began producing limited edition prints of his finer work and has many limited edition prints in circulation today. Private collections around the world proudly display his artwork. Because he and his wife Sandy have traveled to many countries in ministry, his work reflects many localities and varying subject matter. His favorite subjects are wildlife and scenery, although he has received commissions for themes involving people.
David Bishop has been a licensed minister in the Church of God for more than 55 years. He has served as an evangelist, Bible College professor, pastor and Executive Council member of his denomination. Because he wishes to seize every opportunity to communicate a biblical message, many works carry a Scripture reference to go along with the theme of the painting. His grandest desire is that his work might so reflect the world about him as to bring honor to God, the Creator of all things. To him this would be the ultimate fulfillment as an artist.
